Growing Herbs: Herb Gardening 101

Growing Herbs: Herb Gardening in Your Home

Growing Herbs is not as hard as many of us believe. It is not only a cheaper way of making food tasty, it is a great addition to any garden and kitchen!

There are however, a few things that can make it difficult.

  • - Lack of Sunlight: Everyone knows that a garden of any kind, whether it is backyard, or apartment the soil needs light of some kind.
  • - Pets: If you intend on using some "Miracle Soil" to help your plants grow faster, keep your pets away! The specially fertalized soil is deadly to them.

  • - Ditto for children. The Herbs may grow in some great soil, but little kids like to eat little things

  • - Lack of watering. The dirt must be kept damp to the touch. If it is to soiled the seeds will drown, and not enough, they'll die.
  • Given that almost everyone is tightening up on our food budgets, I highly suggest that Late Febuary to Early March is the time to get started on growing herbs. So, that by the time spring/summer rolls around, you will be saving some money by picking off the stalk.

  • I say this early so that by the time the spring holidays come, you maybe closer to transplanting outside than your neighbours, and they should be a lot stronger of a stalk than if they are planted later in the year.
  • Want to Make a Few Bucks Growing Herbs?

Plan ahead!! Everyone is always going to want fresh herbs for their home.

Gettting a head start now, can help you down the road.

The cost of seeds is pretty low, (as in less than a dollar for about a hundred seeds). But if you get plastic planters from the dollar store and have full grown herbs by early summer, you can start selling them to family and friends. =) (now thats forward thinking!)

If you spend $0.89 for each pot & seed and take 10 seconds watering them every other day, with proper lighting within a few months you will have a successful batch of growning herbs.

You can then sell them for $2 to your family. If every penny counts than growing herbs is a great way to get started!

Herb Gardening is Easier than You Think

I highly suggest that if you are going to get into Herb Gardening, start by going to the Dollar Store to pick up their little pots.

Fill the pot 3/4 full with soil. Using your index finger, make a small hole in the center of the soil and place 3 - 5 seeds into each pot and individual hole.

Cover the hole and pat down gently. The soil for your herb garden should look nicely packed not like it is the packed sand at the beach.

Place the pots in a window that gets great sunlight.

There's another Way to Start Your Own Herb Garden:

If you have the seeds but not the soil and pots don't worry!

You can easily start Your own Herb Garden by placing the seeds in water. Yup, just water!

The water will still feed the seeds as normal, and within a few weeks you'll be able to see the roots coming out.

Or.. You can always wrap the seeds in a 1/2 piece of paper towel and make the towel damp. Then place the soiled towel into a ziploc baggie and place in a dark, warm location.

Again, within a few weeks, this will help you get started Growing Herbs!

Remember that growning herbs and gardening is going to depend on the herb you want to mature.

Dill can be transplanted into a flower garden to keep unwanted animals out, and still be used in foods.

Where as green onions or chives do just as well in the pot as they do in the soil.

If you have no interest in starting your own herb garden, I suggest going to the local house and home store.

Look in their gardening section as they usually have some "pre-made" potted herbs.

In my opinon, why pay so much more for something you can make so cheaply yourself.

This will give you a nice "container garden" that will decrease some of your grocery costs throughout the remaining summer months.

Plus, when it comes to be a cold and costly winter, you will never have to worry about not having nice spices in the house.

Growing herbs is so easily!
