Once a Month Cooking: How to Eat Lots and Cook Once!

Once a Month Cooking: How to Eat Lots and Cook Once!

  • Once a Month Cooking? Seems impossible doesn't it!?
  • Well, I am here to tell you that if you are 100% committed to it, it is possible. Granted, it will take time and energy and lots of food, but rest assured it is possible!
  • And it is probably not as hard as you think. That's because all it really takes is some serious planning, a lot of prep and a whole day to cook it all.
  • What about all the Fruits and Vegetables?! Well, I'm glad you asked! Something to remember when doing your monthly planning is that you are what you eat!
  • Makes sense right? Consider this.. If you are concerned about making sure you get all your fruits and veggies in, than use the fruits and veggies in the food instead!
  • Ok! Ok!! Let me explain. My lasagna for example does not use pasta. Instead it uses eggplant for the layers and real tomato sauce.
  • Meaning, I boil my own tomatoes than blend them. However, I cannot stress enough discussing this option with your doctor before leaving any food groups out. This is just a different way of getting them in!
  • So what kind of food does once a month cooking get you?

Well, you need to remember that if you are going to be cooking once a month, there more than likely will be some repetition. So if your life me and hate leftovers, I wouldn't recommend going this route.

  • However, with that being said, I could likely spend a whole day in the kitchen and have enough dinners for the month.
  • I'll tell you why this would work for me..

Several Days a month my family is gone to thier dads.

That gives me about 15 days a month where I only have to feed myself.

Then if I was to include every Tuesday where I have to pack a "picnic" supper.. Well, then that brings me up to about 19 days in a month. Leaving me with only about 10 days a month where my family sits at the table for dinner.

So as you can see, monthly cooking would be no big surprise for me to accomplish and my grocery bill is much lower than most. However, keeping my grocery bill down is still a task in itself.

It requires a ton of research (but you can find it easier on my Cheap Foods List), a lot of discipline, and even more freezer bags. If you really want to accomplish once a month cooking, you need to wake up early.

Spending a whole day in the kitchen for a 30 days of food will be exhausting! My sister in law and I used to get together at her house to do a lot of cooking and it was fantastic!

If Your Really ready to tackle a task as massive as Once a Month Cooking..

Be Prepared!!

It is no easy feat, but with some good planning and friends in tow, it can be as easy as 1-2-3!

Her & I used to stand in the kitchen for hours and make one food that could last for 30 days.. Lasagna.

It tastes fantastic, making one can end up as three or 4 meals and is healthy.

And the best part is that the several meals it makes, will deminish your "Long Term Slaving Over the Oven!"

We also made bread, chili, you name it! It was very tiring, (and I personally did not enjoy cooking in her gas heated oven as it took way longer) but the pay off was so worth it!

We always had a ton of food for a month of suppers.

Now, granted it didn't include breakfast and lunch, however, we often used the bread recipe above as a way to make buns. We would then use those buns instead of bread for sandwiches.

You need to get creative, and be ready to be tired at the end! But when it is all said and done, you will absolutely have accomplished Once a Month Cooking!
