Supplements have taken Western Society by storm. They are now found in every grocery store, food market, and pharmacy across the land. Even doctors are prescribing them and there are health stores dedicated to them. But what is really in these little health-pill-wonders and do we really know what we are taking?
Too many of these "supplements" are used improperly. They are often taken in replacement of foods such as fruits, vegetables or protein. What most people do not understand is that they are an additive to your daily regime not a replacement. And if you are taking a replacement they are not to be taken on a daily basis. Not only is the use of them over simplified by a "one-a-day" capsule, but the residual effects are astounding. Many of the over the counter preservatives are filled with binders and fillers. These are just to help hold the product together and do nothing for the body, often not even being excreted.
Don't get me wrong
There are plenty of additions that you can make to your body and diet that are neither harmful nor expensive. Many products that are on the shelves today have to pass Canadian guidelines. This is a standardized directorate that must approve any product before it hits any shelf in Canada and must be listed with a specific N.H.P.D. number. The N.H.P.D. or Natural Health Products Directorate is a division of Health Canada and forms all the regulations for products within this country.
But please understand that just because something is "F.D.A. approved" does not make it right or wrong. It means that for that country it is approved for sale and is considered safe. If you cannot find that product in Canada, it is because it is not N.H.P.D. registered nor approved. So if you see a t.v. commercial and you see something you want, do not expect to find it in a store in Canada from an American Television show.
It's just not going to happen.
