Watermelon: A Great Juicy Treat>
Watermelon like most melons is a delicious treat. High concentrates of water make this fruit a great summertime snack. Probably one of the easiest things to cut up and bring to the beach and kids just gobble it up! When deciding which one to buy from the store look for one that has an indent where it has been picked from the vine. A fruit that has been picked too early will still have part of the vine attached, meaning it was picked before it was ripe. **Did you know: That the flesh of this melon is very high in pectin which helps to keep cholesterol in check.** And since it does not contain starch, it does not continue to ripen after it has been removed from the vine. High sugar can also be detected from smelling the outer layer to help ensure you are choosing a fully ripe fruit. Another way to guarantee a ready to eat watermelon is to shake the fruit. The seeds that are contained inside loosen when it is ready to eat.High Vitamin C content is also predominant in this fruit, however something to note: as soon as the fruit is cut, it begins to loose it's vitamin c due to air. In order to choose the perfect fruit, make sure it is whole and in tact, has the stem fully removed, and any way you shake it you can hear the seeds inside rattling around!
Square WatermelonsSo how do they make those Watermelons so cute and square? I am going to go totally on a limb (and I mean this is some serious tree climbing haha > |
